Chitta
Introduction
Chitta – Quick Facts
- Meaning: Land revenue document detailing the land area, size, and owners under a specific village.
- Type: Historically classified land as Punjai (Dry) or Nanjai (Wet).
- Integration: In 2015, Patta and Chitta were merged into a single document known as Patta-Chitta in Tamil Nadu.
- Custodian: The Village Administrative Officer (VAO) and Tahsildar.
What is a Chitta?
The Chitta is an essential land record predominantly used in Tamil Nadu that outlines the exact dimensions, area, and ownership details of agricultural or non-agricultural land. It meticulously categorizes the land into Nanjai (wetland) or Punjai (dryland), which dictates the property's taxation and allowable usage.
Today, the Government of Tamil Nadu has completely merged the Patta and Chitta. You no longer apply for them separately. A single "Patta-Chitta" extract now provides the definitive record of possession (Patta) and the geographic classification (Chitta) online.
